Cold Climate Olives.
From the research that has been performed & information that has been collated the following olive trees appear to be all suitable for the Tasmanian climate as well as other D5 areas within Australia and therefore should grow and fruit, some types are more suited to certain regions within the D5 zone.


Barouni, Table -
(Uovo Di Peccino)

Resistant to cold winters
Harvest mid-April to early May
Table large 7.4g fruit, oil content 16.5%
Table pick when green, early cropper.

 

Manzanillo -

Table/oil mid fruit 4.8g oil content 20.3%
Yield is high
Crops well, even with no frosts
Harvest early in season
One of the best dual purpose.

 

Mission -

Table/oil very resistant to extreme cold
Mid to late season cropper
Table small 4.1g oil content 21.8%
(It has been brought to the attention of the T.O.I.A
that there may be a problem with this type of
Olive Tree within Tasmania at present).

 

Paragon - oil

Tough tree
Heavy mid season cropper
Good nutty flavoured fruit 3.2g
High oil 23.5 %.

 

Nevadillo (Picual)

Suited to heavier soils
The fruit is small size 2-4 grams
Oil content is 23-28%
Heavy and constant cropper.

 

U.C. Range (6A7 - 22A11 23A11 -
13A6
- 23A9)

All are of the large table variety
Can be picked green or black, however mainly green- size depending on type. Varies between 10.5g & 13.5g All are very early croppers.

 

Boutillan, Bouquettier,
Arecuzzo, Pigali, LeCcure, Palermo,
Palsano

All are high grade oils
They all seem to have very high
growth rates across Tasmania
High resistance to cold and frosts
Tolerant to a wide range of soils & conditions

 

Sevillano

Also known as Gordal, Sevillana, Spanish queen
This type seems to be only suited to the warmer regions of the D5 areas e.g East coast of Tasmania

 

T.E.C

(Tasmanian Ecological Condition)
This strain has been within the state for approximately 100 years. The fruit is small to mid size and is an even cropper. The leaf is shorter and much wider than its two cousins (The Wagga & the SA Verdale ).
Research to date shows it is very cold and frost resistant. Can be grown in a range of soils with little or no effect to its growth rates as this strain grows faster than most if not all other varieties we propagate at our nursery.

 

Nab Tamri

Table mid to heavy cropper Fruit size 10 -11g.
Suits most areas of Tasmania
Unlikely to suit the colder regions that can be located In parts of the North West Coast.

 

Pendulina

This tree has two main purposes, one as an oil tree with 22% oil. The other as a pollinator and is used to cross pollinate a wide range of other oil varieties.

 

Ascolana

Very large table 11.1grams av.
Easy to bruise. (This fruit is processed for oil U.S.A.)
Pickle price is high for this olive.
Oil content 18.8 (Re Olive Production Manual)
